Exhibits red cherry, black currant, mineral and spice aromas and flavors. It's very tightly wound, yet all the elements--bright acidity, firm, ripe tannins and concentrated fruit--are in the right proportions.

• Wine Advocate: Tasted at the Domaine Engel tasting in London, the 2002 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is still a fabulous wine, consummate 2002 red Burgundy. It has a fragrant and floral bouquet with wilted rose petals and just a hint of peony, all with tip-top focus and almost disarming precision. This is a case of less is more. The palate is medium-bodied and very complex with notes of sour cherry, cranberry and underlying minerals. Like before, there is a wondrous sense of symmetry that makes this Clos de Vougeot effortless, while the finish lingers and never wants to leave. Nor do you want it to. Tasted October 2016.

• Vinous: Another strong showing for the 2002 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru from the late Philippe Engel. The nose is ethereal, offering raspberry and crushed strawberry scents, and the palate is extraordinary in terms of focus. The finish oddly reminds me of Engel's Grands Echézeaux. Magnificent. Tasted at Noizé restaurant in London.

Producer Information

Domaine d'Eugénie is a wine producer in Burgundy's Vosne-Romanée known for its Pinot Noir. It was formed in 2006 from the esteemed vineyards of Domaine René Engel after the death of its proprietor, Philippe Engel, which included premier and grand cru plots. Francois Pinault, owner of Château Latour, bought the vineyards but not the winery. Following Engel's death in May 2005, the 2005 vintage of Domaine René Engel was sold in bulk. After the acquisition of the vineyards, Domaine D'Eugénie operated in an interim space at Domaine Lupé-Cholet in Nuits-Saint-Georges for the 2006, 2007 and 2008 vintages. In the interim, D'Eugénie established its own winery back in Vosne-Romanée, at the former Clos Frantin vineyard and buildings. These formerly belonged to Beaune-based wine estate Albert Bichot. Bichot retained the Clos Frantin brand. D'Eugénie upgraded all the facilities and renamed the monopole vineyard to Clos d'Eugénie. The domain farms 6.5 hectares (16 acres) in Vosne-Romanée, Vougeot and Flagey-Échezeaux. It produces six wines from five appellations: the grand crus Échezeaux, Grands Échezeaux and Clos de Vougeot, the premier cru Aux Brûlées and Vosne-Romanée Villages. In 2009, several parcels of vineyards began the conversion to biodynamic farming practices.
