Red Wine: 2005 | Château La Providence | Pomerol

The Providence 2005 is very sweet and generous on the nose with dark cherries, blueberry and a touch of fresh prune. It becomes more and more floral in the glass, though never quite achieves the precision of its peers.

      Detailed Description

The Providence 2005 is very sweet and generous on the nose with dark cherries, blueberry and a touch of fresh prune. It becomes more and more floral in the glass, though never quite achieves the precision of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with quite an oaky entry that needs more integration. There is plenty of depth here, moderate complexity and hints of coffee emerging towards the finish.

        Producer Information

Château La Providence (sometimes labeled as "Providence") is a former Pomerol wine estate, located in the heart of the Pomerol commune (and winegrowing region). A part of the wider Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix portfolio of properties its production, since 2015, has been absorbed into that of Moueix stablemate, La Fleur Pétrus. The estate covered four hectares (10 acres) and its vineyards sit next to the Église Saint-Jean church in Pomerol (a local landmark). The vines were predominantly Merlot (90 percent) with 10 percent Cabernet Franc – a relatively typical makeup for the area. The estate was originally dubbed Château Tropchaud (French for "too-hot") but had been renamed by former owners to La Providence in 1928. It was acquired by local heavyweight Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix (which owns and operates numerous properties in the region, including the stellar Pétrus and Providence neighbor, Trotanoy) in 2005. The wines were produced as Providence for a decade, although in tougher vintages no wines were released under the label. Since 2015, the estate production has been subsumed by that of Château La Fleur Pétrus.
