      Detailed Description

One of the finest renditions of this cuvée remains the 2005 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale, a deep, elegantly fleshy, medium to full-bodied wine evocative of cherries, dark berries, espresso roast, raw cocoa and rich soil tones. Structured around ripe tannins and lively acids

        Reviews:

        • Burghound: The relatively deeply pitched and quite ripe blue and violet-suffused nose flashes additional breadth in the form of discreet earth and game hints. There is excellent volume and mid-palate density to the naturally sweet, rich and sappy flavors that are wrapped around a still moderately firm tannic spine while the lingering finish tighens up considerably. As is often the case this is a relatively refined Nuits and while it's still on the way up it is not so structured or austere that it could not be enjoyed now provided that it was given 30 to 45 minutes of air first.
        • John Gilman: The Clos de la Maréchale is also outstanding in 2005, as it very nicely avoids any signs of the slight overripeness that can be found in some examples of Nuits in this vintage. The ’05 Clos de la Maréchale offers up a complex and classic Nuits nose of red cherries, strawberries, orange zest, woodsmoke, excellent minerality, a touch of the gamebirds to come, coffee and just the faintest whiff of spicy wood. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, pure and transparent, with a lovely austerity that is almost a relief after all the opulent 2005s, a sappy core of red fruit, beautiful focus, and excellent length and grip on the tangy, ripely tannic finish. One does not expect young Nuits in a great vintage to offer a lot of early generosity, and the ’05 Clos de la Maréchale is beautifully balanced on its structural elements, but it will not take too many years of bottle age for this wine to really begin to sing. A Nuits St. Georges with a Chambolle’s heart in 2005. Most impressive.

        Producer Information

Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier is a Burgundian wine producer based in Chambolle-Musigny. It is particularly well-known for its Musigny Grand Cru wine which is regarded as a benchmark for that vineyard. While the estate is most closely associated with Pinot Noir wines from Chambolle-Musigny, it has 10 hectares (25 acres) of vineyards in Nuits-Saint-Georges as well. The Château de Chambolle-Musigny has been owned by the Mugnier family since 1863. From 1950, as there was no winemaker in the family, the vineyards were contracted out to Faiveley and Bruno Clair, with the latter selling the wine in bulk. Between 1985 and 2004, Frédéric Mugnier was able to take back the vineyards as leases expired. On top of the Musigny Grand Cru, Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier makes a wine from the Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru vineyard, as well as two premier cru wines, Les Fuées and Les Amoureuses, and a village-level wine. From the Nuits-Saint-Georges holdings, Mugnier makes a Clos des Fourches premier cru wine, and a red and a white premier cru from the Clos de la Maréchale vineyard, which is a monopole of the domaine. Vineyards are farmed without herbicides or pesticides and just two mildew treatments per year. Grapes are de-stemmed and whole berries are fermented in old open wooden vats. After around 16 months in oak, wines are bottled without fining and filtration.
