        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: The 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is a beautiful wine that hits all the right buttons. This wine opens to evident ripeness, but that abundant dark fruit is well contained within the larger framework of this wine. The Rabajà cru delivers dense and well-structured Nebbiolo grapes with firm tannins and broad, muscular appeal. This Riserva opens nicely in the glass and offers a generous stream of dark fruit and spice flavors. This wine is poised to shed some of that baby fat with time. It's always a special year when the venerated Produttori del Barbaresco releases its set of Riserva Barbaresco wines from the best vineyard sites under their management. The 2011 vintage offers one of those unique opportunities to taste Nebbiolo from Asili, Montefico, Montestefano, Muncagota, Ovello, Rabajà and Rio Sordo. The Riservas were produced in 2009, but Produttori del Barbaresco opted not to make them in 2010. It was determined that 2010 did not have enough consistency for long aging and this decision was controversial, as you can image, given the general applause bestowed on that vintage. Thankfully, we get to enjoy 2011.
        • Vinous: The 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is quite backward today, with intense, salivating tannins that cut through the fruit. The trademark Rabajà balsamic flavor profile is there, with notable darkness and plenty of structure that add complexity to a core of crystalline fruit. Energetic and powerful, with searing tannin and exceptional balance, the Rabajà is going to require considerable patience. The only question is how much.

        Producer Information

Produttori del Barbaresco is an Italian wine producer of the Nebbiolo grape variety in the Barbaresco appellation. As well as being one of the very finest and best-known producers in Barbaresco, it is also regarded as one of the greatest wine cooperatives in the world. There are around 50 member growers with a combined total of around 110 hectares (271 acres) of vineyards. The flagship wine is the generic Barbaresco known for its reliable quality, elegant Nebbiolo typicity and great value. Produttori del Barbaresco also produces mulitple different single-vineyard (cru) riserva Barbarescos in better vintages. These are all vinified and aged in the same style to highlight the differences in terroir. The portfolio is completed by a Langhe Nebbiolo, which is made from young vines in Barbaresco-classified vineyards – as such, it stands up to any Nebbiolo wine in its price bracket. The company also produces Grappa in un-aged and aged versions. An earlier cooperative, founded in 1894, had established Barbaresco as a separate wine district rather than just a supplier of Barolo, but it was closed down in the 1930s due to Mussolini's economic policies. By 1958, the priest of the village of Barbaresco realized that the only way the small growers of the area would survive was if they joined together. He united 19 growers under the Produttori del Barbaresco name, and the first three vintages were made in the church basement before the operation was moved across the village square to the current winery.
