Essences of citrus peel and white peach combine with floral and silky wet stone notes on the nose. The palate has generous fruit flavours, layered mid-palate richness, and focused acidity making for a long textured finish.

• James Suckling: This single-vineyard selection is from what are believed to be BC's oldest Chardonnay vines, planted in the early 1970s. Almost entirely fermented with wild yeasts, it remains young, leesy and still a bit yeasty in the nose. Fresh apple, white melon and cucumber fruits are balanced and buoyed with moderate acidity. Aging 16 months in half new French oak barrels adds a toasty note. Tuck this away another year or two and it should continue to improve.

Checkmate’s estate vineyard, neighboring the Dekleva Vineyard, is perhaps the oldest Chardonnay planting in Canada. The gnarly vines, of unknown clonal origin, are deeply rooted in the Golden Mile Bench soils and utilize them to full potential. Philip McGahan, the winemaker for CheckMate winery in Oliver, BC, matched his six Chardonnays from the 2014 vintage against price-comparative Chardonnays from Burgundy, Sonoma and Argentina's Mendoza Valley.
