2016 | Domaine Henri Boillot | Corton-Charlemagne

Purchased grapes from Pougets in Aloxe-Corton. Palish colour, green tint. Flinty notes are immediately evident but also generous plum fruit, not too yellow, more greengage. Taut and backward but with very good potential.

• Allen Meadows: A distinctly smoky nose combines notes of mineral-reduction with those of green apples, lavender and spice. The super-intense and well-muscled flavors seem to be built on a firm base of minerality before culminating in an explosively long finish.

• Vinous: Bright light-medium yellow. Subtly complex, musky aromas of peach, caraway seed, nutmeg, mace and hazelnutty lees. At once densely packed and penetrating, with a stony citric pungency giving precision to the seamless middle palate and cutting through the wine's texture. Wonderfully pure and energetic for this cuvée, finishing tactile and unflagging, with terrific citrus lift. This has the palate-staining length and structure for a slow and graceful evolution in bottle; it's also the only 2016 here that struck me as tannic, but then classic Corton-Charlemagne typically shows structure more like a red wine.

Producer Information

Domaine Henri Boillot is a wine producer based in Meursault known for its red and white wines from Côtes de Beaune appellations. The estate was named Domaine Jean Boillot until 2005, but was changed when Henri Boillot bought out his siblings in order to distinguish it from his brother's new Domaine Jean-Marc Boillot. Henri had previously set up Maison Henri Boillot for négociant wines and retains these labels to distinguish them from estate wines. A majority of Boillot's white wines are sourced from premier crus in Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet, including the entire 4 hectare (10 ac) Clos de la Mouchere vineyard. The domaine's Pinot Noir-based wines come from premier crus in Savigny, Beaune and Volnay. In the vineyard, Boillot avoids the use of insecticides and herbicides. Heavy pruning takes place in spring to limit yields and fruit is harvested as late as possible to ensure maximum phenolic maturity. The Henri Boillot winery is situated in Meursault. The white wines are fermented in 350-liter barrels and bottled after 18 months of barrel ageing. The Pinot Noir is fermented in stainless steel tanks with some stems retained, and then sees 18 months of barrel aging. The premier and grand cru wines under the Maison Henri Boillot label are sourced from single-vineyard plots with single owners to preserve the authenticity of the site.
