Detailed Description
The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrées suffered some millerandage this vintage and produced particularly small bunches. It has a very perfumed, floral bouquet with earthy tannins imparted by the 30% whole-bunch fruit. The fleshy palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a silky texture and a gentle, caressing finish that is utterly charming.
Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: Lignier's 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrées is showing nicely in bottle, unwinding in the glass with aromas of plums, cassis, sweet soil tones, licorice, dark chocolate and spices. Medium to full-bodied, deep and muscular, it's concentrated and tightly wound, with a chassis of rich, powdery tannins and a lively spine of acidity. This will require patience. The 2019s, according to Laurent Lignier, possess "all the characteristics of great Pinot Noir," and that's an analysis with which I would concur. He has once again produced a fine vintage for both his domaine holdings and négociant sources—the latter, amounting to some 3.5 hectares of vines, now clearly distinguished in our reviews. As readers will know, winemaking is pretty classical at this address, with a short cold maceration, two to three weeks' maceration with one pigéage and one rémontage per day and maturation in barrels, some third of which are new—if possible, without racking—for fully 22 months in the domaine's cold cellars. Lignier began picking on September 16, and alcohol levels range between 13.5% and 14.7%, the latter extreme representing the exception rather than the rule. Tasting through the wines, the vast majority of which were in barrel and had not been racked, the most obvious analogy was with the domaine's 2015s at the same stage—but I look forward to revisiting them from bottle to confirm that impression.
- Burghound: An attractively fresh and surprisingly elegant array offers up notes of earthy dark currant, plum and a whisper of spice. There is good energy and delineation to the lighter weight flavors that exude a refreshing salinity on the delicious, moderately firm and more complex finale.
Producer Information
Domaine Hubert Lignier (formerly Hubert Lignier & Fils and also known as Hubert et Laurent Lignier) is a family-run domaine in Burgundy, producing both red and wines. The estate is located in Morey-Saint-Denis in the Côte de Nuits subregion and is best known for its Pinot Noir wines from the grand cru vineyard Clos de la Roche. It is owned and run by the father-son duo Hubert and Laurent Lignier. The estate is made up of around nine hectares (22 acres) of vineyard land that ranges from the basic Bourgogne appellation to grand cru. Vineyard holdings are primarily located in the villages of Morey-Saint-Denis, Gevrey-Chambertin, and Chambolle-Musigny, with newer vineyards acquired in Nuits-Saint-Georges and Pommard. Pinot Noir is the primary grape variety produced by the domaine, but Chardonnay, Gamay, and Aligoté are also included in the portfolio. Hubert Lignier practices traditional methods in the vineyard to showcase the terroir of each appellation, but practices interventionalist methods for vinification. Wines are left to age for 20-22 months in barrel, and are left unracked and on the lees after malolactic fermentation. Hubert Lignier wines are bottled without fining. Hubert Lignier himself had stepped back from running his domaine in the early 1990s, leaving the reins to his son, Romain. Romain tragically died in 2004 and Hubert returned to winemaking with his other son Laurent. The transition was not smooth, however. Following his death, Romain's widow, Kellen, established the Lucie & Auguste Lignier label (named after the couple's young children) in 2006, using vines leased to Romain by his father. Over this period, Hubert and Laurent Lignier produced wines under the Hubert Lignier & Fils title, with limited access to fruit under the sharecropping agreement with Kellen Lignier. Kellen Lignier produced wines under the Lucie & Auguste Lignier title until 2013. Since then, all Hubert Lignier's vineyard holdings are now labeled under his name.
