Producer: MontGras

Vintage: 2018

Size: 750ml

ABV: 14%

Varietal: Chardonnay

    Country/Region: Chile, Itata Valley

      Detailed Description

From vineyards in the Larqui zone of the Itata Valley, the grapes for this chardonnay grow on volcanic soils. The wine was aged in barrels and 100% underwent malolactic fermentation, and although in theory it could be a much heavier wine, there’s good balance between those lactic and smoky notes and the fresh fruit of a cold zone like Larqui.

      Producer Information

Viña Montgras is a large wine producer in Chile, with properties in several regions, and an extensive portfolio featuring a wide selection of grape varieties, led by Cabernet Sauvignon. It was founded in 1993 and is still owned by businessmen Critián Hartwig and Eduardo Gras, and Eduardo's winemaker brother Hernán, who had worked extensively in Canada. Across all properties, the company now has more than 900 hectares (2200 acres) under vine. The company is based in the Colchagua Valley, where it owns three estates. San José estate is the company’s first property, with 50 hectares (124 acres) planted in 1993, though it is now much larger. The number of grape varieties grown here reaches double figures, lead by Cabernet Sauvignon then Carmenère. Ninquén, established in 1998, is one of the first mountainside vineyards in Chile – previously valley floors were chosen for ease of farming and to achieve high yields. A broad selection of varieties are planted here, led by Syrah. As well as contributing to various Montgras labels, a single-vineyard wine named Ninquén is made from Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.
