Deep ruby red. Variety of aromatic herbs accentuated with generous notes of tobacco and wet earth (dry earth, as well), black currant and liquorice. Good consistent tannic structure, slightly soft. The aftertaste is consistent, structured and full-bodied, with great longevity in the best vintages.

• Vinous: The 2019 Fontalloro is terrific. In this vintage, the blend of three vineyards is a plus in giving a wine endowed with density, resonance and plenty of Sangiovese character. Dried herbs, leather, incense, tobacco and cedar open with time in the glass.

• James Suckling: A fresh and crunchy Fontalloro with currants, orange peel and hints of peaches and cedar. Medium body, firm and fine tannins and a crisp and bright finish. Lots of energy and verticality to this!

Producer Information

Felsina is an Italian wine estate founded in 1966, and situated at the southeast edge of the Chianti Classico appellation in Tuscany. The estate produces a wide range of wines, including multiple Chianti Classicos (including Riservas and Gran Selezione), IGT Toscanas, Vin Santos and sparkling wines. That being said, the estate is best known for its supple, aromatic Super Tuscan wine Fontallaro, and the spicy, intense Rancia Chianti Classico Riserva, both made from Tuscany's most important variety, Sangiovese. Grapes for Fontallaro are sourced from vineyards straddling the Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi appellations, and the wine receives around up to 22 months in French oak, some of which is new. It was once one of many estates owned by the Dukes of Tuscany, and was farmed mainly by sharecroppers growing olives until World War II. Now, 95 of the estate's 600 hectares (235 of 1480 acres) are planted to vines, generally on rocky, chalky soil with layers of mineral-rich marine sediments. The vineyard has been extended and replanted largely using massal selection – taking cuttings from numerous top-performing plants rather than planting clones of a single vine.
