      Detailed Description

Full-bodied and layered with velvety layers of tannins that are beautifully interspersed with ripe fruit and dark-chocolate notes.

      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: Deep purple-black colored, aromas of blackcurrant cordial, stewed red and black plums, chocolate-covered cherries and raspberry coulis erupt from the glass, leading to an undercurrent of tar, licorice, red roses and menthol, plus a hint of unsmoked cigars. The medium-bodied palate is elegant and yet manages seriously impressive intensity, which is well-sustained throughout the mid-palate and finish. Refined and refreshing, delivering beautifully soft, silt-like tannins and bags of bright red and black fruits, it finishes with amazing length and a stunning perfume. Between this and Château Canon, Nicolas Audebert and his team have knocked it out of the park this vintage.
      • James Suckling: A very polished red with blackberry, black olive, walnut, and crushed stone aromas that follow through to a medium to full body with polished, velvety tannins that go on for minutes. Surprisingly open and so attractive. Wonderful length to this.

      Producer Information

Château Rauzan-Ségla is a second growth from Margaux, Bordeaux, as set out in the 1855 classification of Medoc and Graves. The wine of the same name is rich and concentrated, and is often considered one of the best of the second growths. Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for 62 percent of the 70-hectare (173-acre) vineyard, with Merlot at 36 percent and a small amount of both Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot making up the remainder. Soils are clay gravels on a Quaternary river terrace with areas of deeper fine gravel. The second wine, Ségla, is made in a more approachable style than the grand vin. It features a higher proportion of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Since 1994 and its acquisition by fashion giant Chanel, quality has improved at Rauzan-Ségla. Machine harvesting was eliminated, and there was a move to work the vineyards plot by plot. Grapes are sorted by hand and are aged in high-quality Sessile oak barrels. The grand vin spends 18 months in oak with 60 percent new wood. The château was initially founded under the name Domaine de Rauzan in 1661 by Pierre Desmezures, an important figure in Bordeaux's history who, at the time, also owned châteaux Margaux and Latour. Eventually, the property came under the control of the Baroness of Ségla, Catherin de Rauzan, who named it Rauzan-Ségla for herself. In 1994, the estate was bought by fashion giant Chanel, which also owns Château Canon in Bordeaux and St Supéry in Napa.
