Distillery Information
Baron Otard is a Cognac producer with centuries of history. It bottles a number of brandies made predominantly from Ugni Blanc grown in a number of Charentais sub-regions. The distillery was founded at the end of the 18th Century by the eponymous Baron Otard, who narrowly escaped execution during the French Revolution and, in 1795, was able to buy the publicly seized royal estate of Château de Cognac. The château itself has significant history in the region; it had been built on the foundations of an 11th Century fort used to resist Viking raids and was the birthplace of the French king Francis I in 1494. Otard established the Cognac house by using family stores of eau-de-vie to produce the château's first brandy. Otard ran both the château and the Cognac region as its mayor until his death in 1824. The lower vaults proved to house ideal conditions for the cellaring and aging of Cognac and they continue to do so for the modern estate. Grapes are sourced from six Cognac sub-regions namely, Grande Champagne, Petit Champagne, Borderies, Fins Boies, Bon Boies and Bois Ordinaires. Ugni Blanc makes up roughly 90 percent of the vines with the rest given to Folle Blanche and Colombard.
