        Producer Information

The Episcopal wineries Trier Bischöfliches were founded in 1966 through the merger of the three traditional wineries Bischöfliches Konvikt (founded in 1840), Episcopal seminary (founded in 1773) and Hohe Domkirche (founded in 1851). The winery has a fascinating history that is unparalleled even in the traditional wine world. In the late 1960s, the vaulted cellar of the Episcopal Seminary was expanded to serve as a wine cellar for the entire winery. Over 30,000m2on three levels offer sufficient storage space for the variety of unique wines. The cellar is below Trier's old town and dates back to Roman times around 600 AD. In total, the winery now covers over 130 hectares spread over 145 plots and 35 individual sites on all three rivers: Moselle, Ruwer and Saar. The main focus is on the properties of the individual layers. Individuality and character are specifically worked out. In doing so, modern sustainability and traditional wine-growing techniques are combined. A large part of the grapes is still fermented and matured in traditional Fuder barrels. These contain 1,000 liters and are made of oak wood. Here the wines ferment very slowly at cool temperatures, mostly with their own vineyard yeasts. The rest of the grapes are aged in stainless steel tanks. Many of the wines have grapes from both variants and thus have the fruity-soft notes of the Fuder barrels and the fresh lightness of the stainless steel tanks.
