Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: Another amazing offering is the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Chimere, a blend of 93% Mourvedre, 5% Grenache and the rest white varietals. Packaged in a distinctive Italian glass bottle, this inky/purple-colored 2010 exhibits notes of blueberries, charcoal, roasted herbs and scorched earth. The complex aromas are followed by a full-bodied, super intense, young, unevolved wine that was bottled April 26, 2012, but still resembles a barrel sample. As the wine sits in the glass, aromas of blueberries, licorice and graphite emerge. While the tannins are sweet, they are abundant. This remarkable effort came from one 300-liter foudre. Forget it for 4-5 years and drink it over the following 3 decades. By the way, it is about 16% natural alcohol so it is actually less powerful than the 2011. Kudos to Manfred Krankl, Pascal and Vincent Maurel, and Philippe Cambie for this remarkable effort.
- Vinous: Inky purple. Blackberry, blueberry and candied licorice on the expressive nose, with sexy Moroccan spice and floral notes that build with air. Deeply pitched black and blue fruit liqueur flavors expand with air and pick up spicecake and candied violet notes. The endless, sweet finish is lush and creamy and lingers with intense floral and licorice character. This is a new project of the Maurel brothers of Clos St. Jean, Sine Qua Non's Manfred Krankl and enologist Philippe Cambie and this is the first release. Subsequent wines bearing this name could come from Chateauneuf but there will 'definitely be some wines made in California, maybe sooner, maybe later', Manfred Krankl told me.
Producer Information
Clos Saint-Jean is a prestigious Châteauneuf-du-Pape producer based in the famous lieu-dit La Crau. The winery gained critical recognition in the early 2000s and is now in the top echelon of quality southern Rhône producers. Saint-Jean produces five red and one white Chateauneuf-designated wines from the permissible regional grapes, of which Grenache is the most prolific. The Clos saint Jean Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc is produced from Grenache Blanc, Roussane and Clariette. Clos Saint-Jean practices sustainable farming, complete destemming and is known for long maceration periods. For Grenache, there is no ageing in oak but the other red varieties, Syrah and Mourvèdre spend around 12 months in oak. The estate has 44 hectares (108 acres) in La Crau with 1 ha set aside for the white Châteauneuf grapes. The estate was founded by Edmund Tacussel in 1900 and began bottling its own wine for commercial sales in 1910, almost two decades before Châteauneuf-du-Pape became an officially designated appellation. The winery remains family owned and operated, having been inherited by Tacussel's grandsons. Saint-Jean gained real prominence after hiring influential consultant Philippe Cambie in 2002.
