Red Wine: 2015 | Calera | Pinot Noir Mills Vineyard
Less than one-third of a ton per acre came off of this nearly 35-year-old vineyard from this drought-addled vintage, but what made it to bottle is quite amazing. Aromas of earthy thyme, sagebrush, wild black cherry and cocoa are layered and elegant.

Detailed Description
Less than one-third of a ton per acre came off of this nearly 35-year-old vineyard from this drought-addled vintage, but what made it to bottle is quite amazing. Aromas of earthy thyme, sagebrush, wild black cherry and cocoa are layered and elegant. The palate is rich and thoroughly engaging in flavors of roasted tomato, mulberry and purple flower.
Reviews:
- Vinous: The 2015 Pinot Noir Mills Vineyard is the one Pinot in this range planted on own-rooted vines. The bouquet alone is exotic, with tons of bright floral notes that soar from the glass. Intensely perfumed red cherry and berry flavors add to the wines exotic yet totally beguiling personality. In this range, the Mills is differentiated by its penetrating aromatics and overall freshness.
- Wine Spectator: Lusciously spiced, with mouthfilling flavors of cherry tart, raspberry and red plum that glide across the palate. The creamy finish is long and rich..
Producer Information
Calera Wine Company is a well-regarded wine estate based in Mt Harlan in California's San Benito County. Calera, which is named for an on-site lime kiln, is notable for its limestone-rich soils, a rarity in California. Pinot Noir is the key grape variety here, making several single-vineyard wines.Winemaker Josh Jensen trained in Burgundy, working a harvest at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and later interning at Domaine Dujac. It was there that he learned that Pinot Noir and Chardonnay thrive on limestone soils, so upon returning to the US, he went in search for that terroir. In 1974, he purchased land that was once a limestone quarry on Mt Harlan, and planted 10 hectares (24 acres) of Pinot Noir in 1975. The first vintage from the vineyard was in 1978, and since then the estate has been expanded to include plantings of Chardonnay, Viognier and Aligoté.
