        Producer Information

Azienda Agricola Barbacarlo (often appended with Comm. Maga Lino di Maga Giuseppe after the estate's veteran winemaker Lino Maga) is a wine estate based in the town of Broni, just south of Pavia, in the Oltrepò Pavese region of Lombardy, northern Italy. The estate produces a pair of single-vineyard red wines from the area – a blend of local red varieties under the Otrepo Pavese DOC/DOP and/or Provincia di Pavia IGT titles. Sometimes referred to as Vino Maga, the estate produces two, minimal-intervention wines from the Barbacarlo and Montebuono vineyards, both of which give their names to the labels (although the former is the better-known). The former covers around four hectares (10 acres) with the latter a slightly smaller three hectares (7.5 acres) – as such production is limited. The wines are a blend of local mainstays Croatina, Uva Rara and Vespolina grown from very old vines and cultivated without synthetic herbicides or pesticides. Harvest is done by hand. Winemaking is non-interventionist with indigenous yeast ferments and aging in old oak. Wines are unfined and unfiltered and sometimes bottled prior to the completion of malolactic fermentation. Nonetheless, the wines have a storied reputation among traditional and natural wine aficionados and, despite their instability at bottling, are reputed to enjoy exceptional longevity.
