Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: Hints of black olive wind around and through the blackberry and cherry core of the 2020 Crozes Hermitage. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and ripe, with a velvety feel and ample length, this is a fine example of the appellation.
- Vinous: Dark magenta. Smoky black and blue fruit aromas are complemented by lively mineral and black pepper accents. Offers energetic boysenberry, cherry-cola and violet pastille flavors, along with notes of black pepper and olive paste. The floral note repeats on the persistent finish, which features well-knit tannins and lingering spiciness.
Producer Information
Domaine du Colombier has been owned by the Viale family since the end of World War I. In 1929, Florent Viale’s great-grandparents moved to the farm as sharecroppers and planted their first vineyard at the foot of the Hermitage hill, which amounted to little more than two acres. Florent’s grandparents succeeded them—first as sharecroppers, then as farmers—and considerably enlarged the area. Florent’s father was able to purchase the farm from his father in 1959, and his marriage to the daughter of a wine grower in Mercurol further increased the size of the estate. After undertaking wine studies in Bordeaux, Florent joined his father in 1990, and together the two bottled the production and established Domaine du Colombier the following year.
