Producer Information

Ken Forrester is a producer located in the Stellenbosch region of South Africa. It is one of the country's leading producers of Chenin Blanc, although the company makes a wide array of red and white wines from other top South African varieties like Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon. Ken Forrester's wines are considered by many to be of very good value. The property was originally known as Zandberg, and the first vineyards were planted there in 1694 by Frederick Boot, a man infamous for fathering eight children out of wedlock and being banished to Mauritius as a consequence. In 1833, the property fell into the hands of the Scholtz family, who renamed the property Scholtzenhof. The Scholtz family farmed the property for well over a century, before falling on hard times during apartheid. The Forrester family purchased the property in 1993, and restored the home and replanted the vines, releasing their first vintage in 1994. The estate lies on the lower slopes of the Helderberg mountain. Here, the warm sunshine is tempered by the maritime influence from the Atlantic promoting a long growing season. Several varieties are grown on the property including Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Shiraz. The portfolio is separated into three tiers, with the Icon Range being at the top. This includes several wines made from Chenin Blanc – while the flagship FMC Chenin Blanc is the most popular wine, Ken Forrester also produces a sparkling Chenin Blanc known as Sparklehorse, a late harvest Chenin Blanc, and a Grenache called Gypsy. The Ken Forrester (Reserve) range is the next tier, and consists of wines made from a range of grape varieties sourced from the family's property. Finally, Ken Forrester's entry-level range is known as Petit.
