        Producer Information

Established in 1977, Oasis was one of the original pioneers in the new Virginia wine industry, started as a hobby, simply gone mad. Oasis planted some of the first Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the Commonwealth. What was originally supposed to be only 3 acres of grape vines ended up yielding nearly 9 acres’ worth since the Salahi family planted the vines too close together. At the time, it was not considered good viticulture, but today it is standard to plant the vines near each other to create stress and thus to produce higher quality grapes, resulting in better wine. Oasis grew successfully for over 35 years and, at its peak, had 100 acres of vines onsite in production and was serving wines nationwide – from the world famous Inn at Little Washington to United Airlines to Outback Steakhouse to America's only U.S. National Park for the Performing Arts: Wolf Trap. At its peak, Oasis was producing 35,000 cases in one year, averaging over the years 15,000 cases annually. However, Oasis also suffered numerous setbacks, including harassment from the zoning office (which led to a decade-long legal defense of the winery’s “by right” activities in accordance with the Farm Winery Act), and the death of Tareq's dad due to Alzheimer’s, followed by a public divorce. Oasis is considered a major player and leader in changing the laws for the Commonwealth’s wine industry by authoring HB1435, which passed unanimously in the Senate after only one “nay” in the House. This allowed all wineries to do what they do every day: host guests in the beauty of the Commonwealth with first class hospitality.
