      Detailed Description

Medium carmine garnet, violet core, ruby red reflections, wide ocher rim. The nose is still full of fresh fruit, cranberries and sour cherries, plus oriental spices, fine roasted aromas, creamy caramel nuances, delicately smoky. Fresh red berry fruit on the palate, cherries, convincing complexity, a wine with great development potential, fine roasted aromas in the finish, salty minerality in the finish.

        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: A broody nose and out of all the wines, this is the one that smells the most stalky. Complex though, very classic, with red-berried fruit, cigar box and a touch of bitter chocolate. The palate is disjointed at first and demands half an hour to meld together. Spicy and muscular, very traditional in style, not flamboyant but broody and sullen. But there is real intensity on the back palate with a green note on the finish. Very long, but this will need patience. Not a wine for those who like a bit of hedonism in their La Tache and without the persistency a great vintages. But still a class act.
        • Burghound: This too is sublime in its subtlety and grace with ineffably pure aromas and it strikes a balance between the opulence of the RSV and the restraint of the GE with an expressive yet ultra fine nose of rose petals, violets and seductive spice notes that introduce unbelievably refined flavors that seem crafted from silk and lace, culminating in a linear, mouth coating finish that detonates like a bomb and lasts and lasts. At present, this is taut and precise with the lithe muscularity of a world class gymnast yet it is not lean or unduly tight as there is a generosity to the mid-palate that serves to buffer the underlying tannic spine that will permit this to age for decades. This is clearly a great wine that epitomizes the concept of power without weight.

        Producer Information

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, or DRC as it is commonly known, is easily Burgundy's best-known and most collectible wine producer. Based in the Burgundy village of Vosne-Romanée, the domaine sells wines from eight different grand cru vineyards that span the length of the Côte d'Or. The most famous comes from the eponymous Romanée-Conti vineyard, and on average is the most expensive wine in the world. The domaine predominately produces Pinot Noir-based wines from 28 hectares (69 acres) of grand cru vineyard. Alongside Romanée-Conti are La Tâche, Romanée-Saint-Vivant and Richebourg in Vosne-Romanée; plus Échezeaux and Grands Échezeaux bottlings. Fruit from Corton-Bressandes, Corton Clos du Roi and Corton Renardes is combined in a single Corton Grand Cru red. There are three white (Chardonnay) wines made. Only one of these, the Montrachet is made widely avilable. A Bâtard-Montrachet and a Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits are not publically distributed. Of course, La Romanée-Conti is the domaine's most famous asset, and the amount of wine made from less than 2ha (5 acres) of land amounts to just 6000 bottles a year. The vineyard has a long history, dating back to the Abbey of Saint-Vivant in the 13th Century. It took on the Romanée name in 1631, and the Conti in 1760.Today, DRC is owned in part by the de Villaine family and in part by the Leroy family. Aubert de Villaine is the figurehead of the company now – although it was famously run by Lalou Bize-Leroy for a time, until a dispute saw her ousted from control.
