      Detailed Description

Aromas of menthol, leather, pressed violet, forest floor and woodland berry lead off this intense Brunello. The firm, delicious palate offers dried red cherry, crushed raspberry, ground white pepper and licorice alongside a backbone of assertive but fine-grained tannins and racy acidity.

      Reviews:

      • Wine Spectator: Rich, with a smooth texture and lively structure supporting the mulled cherry, licorice, leather and tobacco flavors. This firms up — a good sign in a young red, with a lingering finish of tobacco and spice.
      • Vinous: Andrea Costanti’s 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is fabulous. The purity and translucence of Sangiovese comes through beautifully as the wine opens up. Refined, pedigreed and exceptionally beautiful, the Costanti pretty much embodies what 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is all about. Reference-point Brunello. It’s as simple as that.

        Producer Information

Conti Costanti is a well-regarded Brunello di Montalcino producer, based just southeast of the eponymous village of Montalcino, in the rolling hills of southern Tuscany, Italy. The estate is predominantly known for its range of Brunello di Montalcino DOCG and Rosso di Montalcino wines although its portfolio also includes two Grappa di Brunellos. The Costanti family has a long and storied history in the region. It was involved in the formation of the Republic of Siena in 1555, and became a key presence in the area. The Costantis rose to winemaking prominence in the 19th Century when Tito Costanti was one of the first to make wines using the name "Brunello". Today, the winery is presided over by Andrea Costanti, who took over the family-owned business in 1983. The Conti Costanti estate spans 25 hectares (62 acres) of land, with 12 hectares (30 acres) planted to vine. The majority of the vineyard is planted to Sangiovese, with vines varying in age from six to 25 years old. These vines have been further supplemented with a small three-hectare (seven-acre) plot planted to Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are typically harvested in early October and fermented on their skins in stainless steel vats for up to three weeks, depending on the vintage. The Brunello di Montalcino DOCG and Brunello di Montalcino Riserva wines are aged for 18 months in tonneaux, and then a further 18 months in Slavonian oak casks before spending a year in bottle before release. The Rosso sees just 12 months in younger Allier oak barriques. The Brunello Riserva is only made in the best years and can be cellared for many years.
