2015 | Armand Rousseau | Gevrey Chambertin Clos St Jacques (Magnum)

For four generations, the Rousseau family has worked tirelessly and passionately on some of the finest terroirs of the Côte de Nuits. The Clos de Bèze in Gevrey-Chambertin originally belonged to the monks of the Bèze Abbey, who were given the land by the then Duke of Lower Burgundy in the year 630. They cleared the land and planted the first vines of what was to become the Clos de Bèze appellation. Revealing all the elegance and finesse of the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation, the wine is complex with deep colour and a long, smooth finish. The rich aromas are dominated by red berries and oriental spices. Here is the 2015 vintage in luxurious magnum format.

• Vinous: Bright medium red. Captivating high-pitched perfume of raspberry, cranberry and flowers; Then juicy, penetrating and youthfully tight on the palate; plenty ripe and dense, not to mention utterly seamless, but shows rare energy for the vintage, with the tart red berry and crushed-stone qualities of the vineyard lifted by an ineffable floral quality. The slowly building finish displays superb echoing length. A brilliant 2015, this may be a more classic version of this vineyard than the estate's '16.

• Burghound: There is just enough wood present to mention but not so much as to materially detract from the attractively fresh, cool, pretty and airy red berry, earth, humus, anise and rose petal-scented aromas. The refined yet quite powerful middle weight are almost painfully intense and there is so much minerality the mouthfeel is akin to rolling small stones around in your mouth particularly so on the sappy, palate coating and hugely long finish. This too is seriously impressive and very classy.

Domaine Armand Rousseau is a highly regarded and critically lauded wine producer based in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, in the northern Côte de Nuits. Arguably iconic in status, Armand Rousseau is one of Burgundy's oldest and most revered family-run domains. It holds many grand cru plots in Gevrey-Chambertin as well as part of the much sought-after premier cru vineyard Clos Saint-Jacques.Founded at the start of the 20th Century by Gevrey native Armand Rousseau, the domaine initially owned small plots of vines throughout Gevrey-Chambertin. Over the next 100 years under both Armand Rousseau and his son Charles, who took over after the death of his father in 1959, the Domaine acquired various grand cru vineyards in Charmes-, Mazis- (labeled "Mazy" by the domaine) and Mazoyères-Chambertin, culminating in a plot in Le Chambertin itself in 1994.
