      Reviews:

      • Wine Enthusiast: This small estate in the heart of Pauillac has produced a perfumed, polished wine. Wood aging and black fruits are still prominent and need to soften. It is a fine wine from this major appellation.
      • James Suckling: Ashy berries, orange zest, currants, chili chocolate and a touch of black pepper. Juicy and fine-grained on the palate with medium to full body and a succulent finish. Fresh and pretty lengthy.

      Producer Information

Château Bellegrave is a comparatively small wine estate based in the well-regarded Pauillac appellation in Haut-Médoc wine region just north of Bordeaux city. The estate produces two red wines based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The property is located in the south of the appellation and immediate neighbors include châteaux Latour, Pichon-Longueville and Lynch-Bages. It was purchased in 1997 by J.P. Meffre, who already owned Château du Glana in Saint-Julien. The Meffre family are most obviously associated with Maison Gabriel Meffre in the Rhône Valley. Bellegrave's 8.35 hectares (20.6 acres) of vineyard lie on Garonne gravel – an alluvial soil type made, as the name suggests, of a large number of pebbly stones. In terms of proportion, the vineyard is composed of 62 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 31 percent Merlot and seven percent Cabernet Franc. Around 29,000 bottles of the eponymous grand vin are made each year. Proportions in the vineyard are very broadly reflected in the final wine with Cabenet Sauvignon accounting for between 55 and 65 percent of the blend (the remaining portion is primarily Merlot). The grand vin is aged for 12 months in barrel. The percentage of new wood can vary with each vintage, but is often around 40 percent. Bellegrave also produces a second wine – Les Sieurs de Bellegrave – in which the estate's Cabernet Franc makes its appearence. This wine also spends around 12 months in oak, with 10 percent new barrels. Just under 5,000 bottles are made per year. Wine buyers should note that there are several properties named Bellegrave in Bordeaux, including one in Pomerol. A number of others are named Belgrave. Please ensure that your merchant has the exact wine for which you are searching.
