Producer Information
The Zárate tradition begins in 1707 with Diego Zárate y Murga, First Marquis of Montesacro by Decree of Felipe V. Today the family continues to run the family vineyards, many of them centuries old, with which they make natural wines, faithful to the land and living expression of Galicia. Since the mid-20th century, Zárate has been a pioneer in the production of Albariño wine as it is known today. Proposals that aim to remove it from family consumption and make its character known, first in the rest of Spain and then throughout the world. Ernesto Zárate was the founder of the Cambados Albariño Festival, a contest that he would win in its first three years consecutively. Since 2000, Eulogio Pomares has been its viticulturist oenologist. With it would come new techniques based on maximum respect for the environment and completely natural vineyard care processes. The property currently cultivates 6.54 hectares, which are divided into 11 plots in the parishes of Sisán and Padrenda. These two parishes in the Salnés Valley are renowned for their poor and sunny lands and are considered the cradle of Albariño. The average age of the vineyard is about 30 years. We carry out a mass selection on the oldest ungrafted vines with which we make the new plantations. Annually we also carry out replanting in those plots where it is necessary. In caring for the vineyard we carry out environmentally friendly viticulture. Since 1994, all our plots are No-Till with permanent natural cover and we do not use herbicides nor do we apply fertilizers with chemically synthesized nutrients. In the 2006 campaign we obtained certification for our Integrated Production harvest.
