The J.A. Dougherty's Sons' parent company, Trainer & Co was one of the few given licenses to continue bottling whiskey during the prohibition era, which had banned the sale and production of recreational alcohol in 1920. Those with a license to bottle were permitted to do so soley for the medicinal and baking purposes. The whiskey needed to have been distilled prior to 1920, so the company also bought up the stocks of their neighbouring distillery's such as A. Overholt, where this was produced.
Distillery Information
The company was founded in 1849 by John Alexander Dougherty Sr. Dougherty was a native of Ireland (b. June 10, 1788) and arrived in the States by way of Halifax, Nova Scotia, in January 1814. He originally worked as a baker, but was subsequently involved in the distilling business on Spruce St and later on Shippen St.
