Detailed Description
Detailed Description
Considered a benchmark for high-quality Napa Cabernet, Chappellet is a family-owned winery located in the Pritchard Hill AVA of the Napa Valley. Since its foundation in 1967, Chappellet has played a key role in transforming this site on the rocky eastern slopes of the valley into one of the most revered winegrowing sites on America`s west coast. This vintage is a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Merlot. AROMAS AND FLAVORS: Ripe cherry, tea and leather are complemented by excellent natural acidity which gives the backbone needed for a long life.
Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: A blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Merlot, the 1975 Chappellet Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is medium to deep brick in color with a profound nose of chargrill, Black Forest cake and star anise with nuances of tapenade, plum sauce, blackberry preserves and pata negra ham. Medium to full-bodied and relatively youthful in the mouth, sporting a firm structure of grainy tannins and packed with muscular, expressive fruit, it finishes epically long with tons of mineral, savory and black fruit preserves layers. This is very youthful still.
- Decanter: The volcanic soils of Chappellet’s spectacular property on Pritchard Hill produce one of the most brooding and long-lived wines in Napa Valley that sometimes remind me of Bordeaux’s now defunct Château La Tour Haut Brion. At forty years of age, this wine is still a strikingly saturated ruby-black, bursting with expressive and youthful aromas of ripe black cherries, hot bricks, cigar ash and iron. On the palate the wine is incredibly youthful, with a masculine personality, a deep core of fruit, and considerable tannic amplitude. It’s easy to imagine it aging for another forty years.
Producer Information
Chappellet Winery is a wine producer based in the Napa Valley. Donn and Molly Chappellet started the winery in 1967 by purchasing land on Pritchard Hill at the advice of legendary California winemaker André Tchelistcheff. Pritchard Hill, just west of Rutherford, was an appealing site for a vineyard due to its steep aspect, high elevation and east-facing slopes. Chappellet remains family-owned and in 2011 bought the Sonoma County-based producer, Sonoma-Loeb, which had been making its wines at the Chappellet winery for over two decades. The estate vineyards on Pritchard Hill have an altitude that ranges between 800-1800ft (245-550m) above sea level. Chappellet's specialty is red Bordeaux varieties, especially Cabernet Sauvignon, which accounts for 25 of the vineyard's 34 individual plots. Its flagship wine is the critically acclaimed Pritchard Hill Cabernet Sauvignon which is sold mostly to members of its wine club by allocation. Even so, this wine often sells out due to high demand and limited production. Chappellet's other labels have varied in production based on vintage but have included wines made from Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Sirah, Zinfandel, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc. Chappellet prides itself on its commitment to its land and the environment. Only 16 percent of the estate is under vine, with the remainder being uncultivated land. Furthermore, the entirety of the Pritchard Hill vineyard is organic and in 2008, solar panels were installed that generate enough energy to completely offset the winery's needs.
