A tight, almost closed bottle, the 1989 Château Lynch-Bages offers a deep ruby hue with no signs of bricking at the edges. Youthful, powerful darker currants, scorched earth, smoked tobacco, and freshly sharpened pencil notes emerge from the glass, and it's full-bodied, with a dense, layered mid-palate, ripe tannins, and a great finish. The balance is spot on, but this bottle remained tight and unforgiving, despite ample air time.

• Wine Advocate: One of the all-time great vintages for this château is the 1989 Lynch-Bages, a striking wine that offers up pure and intense aromas of cassis, pencil shavings, spring flowers and hints of cigar wrapper. Full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, it's seamless and concentrated, with a rich core of fruit, ripe tannins and a beautifully defined finish. Still an infant at age 32, it surpasses all three of Pauillac's first growths in 1989.

• Wine Spectator: Delivers so much blackberry, leather and dried fruits on the nose. Full-bodied, with ultrapolished tannins and a silky mouthfeel. The palate turns to leaves, cedar and dried berries on the finish, which goes on and on. This is still reserved for the vintage, suggesting a long life ahead. Just coming around now, but will improve many years ahead. I have always loved this Lynch.

Château Lynch-Bages is situated in the Pauillac commune of the Médoc region in Bordeaux. The grand vin, which is made predominantly from Cabernet Sauvignon, is known for its structure and intensity, and can age for 20 years or more. It ranks among the best in the appellation.The property in the village of Bages takes the other part of its name from Thomas Lynch, a Bordeaux merchant of Irish lineage who owned the property from 1749 to 1824. It was rated a fifth growth in the Bordeaux Classification of 1855, although the reputation of the property, now in the hands of the Cazes family, soared from 1945 after a string of excellent vintages.The vineyards are situated on a plateau west of Pauillac town on gravel, chalk and sand soils. There are over 100 hectares (247 acres) of vineyards, which beginning from- 2006 have been divided into 200 parcels to more closely match viticultural practices to terroir.
