      Detailed Description

The palate is powerful and complex. A wine of great finesse and an impressive length in the mouth.

        Producer Information

Château Fonplégade is a wine estate located on the southern hillside of Saint-Émilion, on Bordeaux's renowned Right Bank. The estate is known for its Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé wines made predominantly from Merlot, and takes its name Fonplégade, which means "fountain of plenty", from an underground water source on the property. The winegrowing potential of the land was recognized by Jean-Pierre Beylot, who built the château and surrounding estate in 1852. Since 2004, Château Fonplégade has been owned by Stephen and Denise Adams, who also own Château L'Enclos in Pomerol. The estate has been fully converted to organic practices and is farmed by hand using modern viticultural techniques. Today, globally renowned oenologist Michel Rolland is a consultant for the estate. The Fonplégade vineyard covers 19 hectares (46 acres) of limestone, clay and sand soils that provide the ideal growing conditions for Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The terroir is divided into 27 vineyard blocks split over seven different levels of flat and terraced ground. The oldest vines date back to 1954, and the average vine age is 25 years old. These old vines are low yielding, producing grapes with a high concentration of phenolics and flavor compounds. In the winery, Fonplégade uses gentle production techniques, including gravity-flow systems and manual punch-downs. The grapes are fermented by plot and are aged in 80-percent new French oak prior to blending. Approximately 4000 cases of the grand vin are produced each year.
