• Wine Advocate: The opaque purple-colored 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is extraordinarily full-bodied and powerful, with unbelievable finesse and harmony for a wine of such great extract and richness. Pure creme de cassis intermixed with licorice, minerals, smoke, and incense is accompanied by sweet tannin, well-integrated acidity, wood, and alcohol, and a stupendous finish lasting nearly 45 seconds. The wine is approachable, but should age easily for two decades. The limited production Reserve cuvee (450 cases) is an expression of California winemaking at its most compelling.

• Vinous: Good dark red. Highly expressive aromas of dark berries, truffle, meat, white pepper and exotic spices. Distinctly drier than the 1997 but with pungent acidity intensifying the flavors of black cherry, herbs, resin and peppery spices. The palate doesn't quite deliver what the nose promises but there's no shortage of personality here, especially for a wine from a difficult vintage. The tannins seem resolved but still retain a distinct firmness.

Pride Mountain Vineyards is a California winery that straddles the border between Sonoma County and Napa Valley – a brick inlay charts the border as it bisects the winery's crush pad. Officially it is located in the Spring Mountain District American Viticultural Area (AVA). The Pride Mountain wine portfolio is produced from both Napa and Sonoma grapes, or a blend of both. Due to local labeling laws, Pride Mountain cannot put 'estate' on any of its labels – even when the fruit is entirely sourced from its own vineyards – as it falls across two AVAs. Instead, Pride Mountain labels its more premium wines with 'Vintner Select'. A large range of grape varieties are produced including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Chardonnay and Viognier. Vineyards were first planted at the estate in 1869 when the property was known as Summit Ranch. The winery was constructed in 1890 and was burnt down during Prohibition in suspicious circumstances. It lay dormant until Pride Mountain Vineyards was established in 1990, with a new a winery completed in 1997. Pride Mountain's cave system cellar was finished in 2001 and houses 2400 oak barrels for aging. The property covers 85 hectares (210 acres), a majority of which are planted at high altitudes on Spring Mountain in the Mayacamas Range. This altitude provides ample rainfall in the vineyards requiring attentive canopy managment to ensure that vigor is kept under control.
