Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: A fabulous effort, the 2001 De Malle is closed aromatically, but it exhibits tremendous palate penetration, deep, full-bodied flavors, great acidity for balance, and marvelous notes of lavender, honey, pineapple, creme brulee, and spice. This is a sensationally textured, long, medium gold-colored, moderately sweet 2001. Give it 2-3 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following two decades.
- James Suckling: Golden-colored, with extreme aromas of honey, candied lemons and mandarin oranges. Full-bodied, very sweet and concentrated. It goes on and on. Thick and rich. Loads of spicy, almost hot botrytis character.
Producer Information
The Counts of Bournazel family has been present in the Bordeaux region since the beginning of the 17th century, when Jacques de Malle, their direct ancestor, built the Château de Malle. Enamelled with illustrious figures such as Jacques de Malle, President of the Parliament of Bordeaux; or Pierre de Malle, adviser to Louis XIV, Keeper of the Seals of the Court of Guyenne and Member of Parliament in Bordeaux; or even Henri de Bournazel, known as the "Red Horseman", hero of the war of pacification of Morocco. The history of this family is closely linked to that of Château de Malle. In this charming property, a rigorous know-how, the passion for viticulture and the culture of beauty and goodness are transmitted from generation to generation. After the death of the Count of Bournazel in 1985, it was his wife, the Countess of Bournazel, who elegantly took over the estate, assisted a few years later by her children: Paul-Henry, Antoine and Charles, thus perpetuating the family tradition. Paul-Henry moved to Malle with his family in 1996 and gradually took over the management of operations. In 1999 the family's vineyards grew with the acquisition of Château Pessan, a pretty entity of 12 hectares in the gravel, in the heart of the village of Portets.
