      Reviews:

      • Decanter: Lifted spice and a head-spinning top note are joined by aromas of dark fruits, cassis and a touch of bright cherry mixed with woodland undergrowth. I love the ebullient personality of this wine - there's a crunchy, sappy green note to the juicy fruit which adds a counterpoint to the lush, velvety texture and creates a lovely, bright energy. It all comes together with an expressive exuberance. A wide-awake wine!
      • James Suckling: Attractive coffee, blackberry and tobacco character on the nose. Full-bodied, with loads of velvety tannins and a long, caressing finish. Beauty. Very well-crafted, especially for the vintage.

      Producer Information

Querciabella is a Tuscan wine estate that makes wines in both the Chianti Classico zone and in the Maremma Toscana. The winery has received high critical acclaim for its wines which regularly score highly among critics and competitions. Indeed, Antonio Galloni of Vinous Media has said that, "Querciabella stands head and shoulders above any other estate in Chianti Classico". The estate, whose name means "beautiful oak" in English, has 74 hectares (183 acres) of vineyards within the Greve, Panzano, Radda and Gaiole communes of Chianti Classico. Five wines are produced from these properties: Batàr, a barrel-fermented and -matured blend of Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay; Camartina, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese; the Palafreno Merlot, and Querciabella, a Chianti Classico from 100 percent Sangiovese, which may be labeled as a riserva in some vintages. The 32 hectare (79 acre) Maremma estate produces Mongrana, a blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2013 the estate also released Turpino, an IGT Toscana blend of Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Merlot, using equal proportions of grapes from both production areas. Established by Italian industrialist Giuseppe Castiglioni in 1974 the estate was converted to organics by his son Sebastiano in 1988. It has been biodynamic (albeit without the use of animal products) since 2000, and Querciabella is one of the largest owners, by area, of certified organic vineyards in Italy. No animal-derived products are used in the vineyards or winery, making the wines suitable for vegans.
