Tradition has it that in 1773 the Liverpool merchant Woodhouse sailed his ship along the Sicilian coast in the direction of Mazara del Vallo. Due to a sudden storm, the ship had to dock in Marsala, known at the time for its taverns. Here the merchant tasted the best wine produced in the area , the perpetuum , and was delighted. He decided to taste it, together with his compatriots, in England and, to preserve it during the journey, he added some wine brandy. Thus Marsala was born , a true legend of the Sicilian lands.
