      Detailed Description

Medium red. Complex, scented nose combines cherry, raspberry, dried flowers, spearmint and underbrush, along with a sexy element of smoky oak. The sweetest of these 2008s to this point and downright plump for 2008. A wonderfully chewy, tactile, soil-driven wine with sharp definition to its flavors of red fruits, minerals, spices and earth. Showing more weight and palate presence than the grand crus that preceded it in my tasting. Finishes subtle and long, with a great light touch.

        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: The 2008 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques is an unusually warm, pliant 2008. The use of 80% new barrels here undoubtedly contributes to the wine’s open, generous expression of fruit. The Clos St. Jacques is a beautiful wine, even at this early stage.
        • Burghound: The color is just beginning to lighten at the rim. There is ample secondary influence to the spicy dried red berry scents that reflect additional notes of soft earth and a whiff of the sauvage. There is both excellent intensity and minerality to the beautifully well-detailed middle weight flavors that culminate in a linear, focused and sneaky long finish that is duty and still a bit austere. This is unlikely to ever be a seductive wine as it's shaped and defined by its acidity but I very much like the depth on offer. I would further note that while this could certainly be enjoyed now, there is a bit of upside potential remaining though with that said, I wouldn't advise aging this for the very long-term as it risks becoming edgy in time.

        Producer Information

Domaine Armand Rousseau is a highly regarded and critically lauded wine producer based in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, in the northern Côte de Nuits. Arguably iconic in status, Armand Rousseau is one of Burgundy's oldest and most revered family-run domains. It holds many grand cru plots in Gevrey-Chambertin as well as part of the much sought-after premier cru vineyard Clos Saint-Jacques.Founded at the start of the 20th Century by Gevrey native Armand Rousseau, the domaine initially owned small plots of vines throughout Gevrey-Chambertin. Over the next 100 years under both Armand Rousseau and his son Charles, who took over after the death of his father in 1959, the Domaine acquired various grand cru vineyards in Charmes-, Mazis- (labeled "Mazy" by the domaine) and Mazoyères-Chambertin, culminating in a plot in Le Chambertin itself in 1994.
