This is mind-blowing on the nose with sweet tobacco, chocolate, cedar, cigar box, and licorice. Full-bodied and round with a bright and velvety tannin structure. Starts off slow, but then flies away. This is fabulous. Intense finish.

• Wine Advocate: The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection is the first example of this cuvee to include Merlot (about 14%) in the blend. The Merlot component has given the wine a cocoa/chocolate nuance to its black currant, licorice-infused fruit. The tannins are velvety soft and the wine is beautifully textured and full-bodied. It is ideal for drinking now and over the next 15 years.

• Wine Spectator: Beautifully crafted, rich, intense and powerful, yet supple, graceful and polished, offering a generous core of spicy blackberry, black licorice, wild berry and light cedary notes. Full-bodied and expressive, this is both approachable now and sure to improve for several years.

Producer Information

Caymus Vineyards is a well-regared and relatively historic wine producer based in Rutherford, in California's Napa Valley. Like most of the valley's famous producers, it specializes in top-end wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon. Its top wine, the Caymus Vineyard Special Selection, is notable for having been the only wine to have twice topped Wine Spectator's Top 100 list. This was achieved with its 1984 and 1990 vintages.

History: The first vintage of Caymus was in 1972, although the Rutherford property, owned by the Wagner family, has been planted to grapes since the 1940s. These were sold to other producers in Napa until the 19-year-old Chuck Wagner agreed to help his parents establish a winery on their ranch. Today, Caymus Vineyards is still family owned and operated, with various wines made by Chuck's sons Joe and Charlie, and his daughter, Jenny.
