Petrolo's 2014 Galatrona is impressive. Medium in body, with striking aromatic presence and depth, the 2014 is all class. Exotic spice, rose petal, mint and red plum give the wine its air of cool sophistication.

• James Suckling: The polish and fine texture to this 2014 is impressive with blueberry, dark chocolate and light walnut aromas and flavors. Medium body, integrated tannins and a long, refined finish. Serious sense for the vintage.

• Wine Spectator: Black currant, cedar, thyme and spice flavors are backed by a solid structure here. Firm tannins take hold of the finish as this winds down, with echoes of fruit and spice. Needs short-term aging to absorb the oak. Merlot.

Petrolo is the definition of a cult winery, with an owner and a story that have helped create its legendary status. While the estate's benchmark wine, the Merlot cru Galatrona, deservedly receives fireworks in the press and is part of the history of Tuscany’s quality revolution in the late 1980s and 1990s, the winery's two other standouts, Torrione and Boggina, are an equally thrilling success - Sangiovese from a special and virtually unknown appellation bordering Chianti Classico that today produces wines of distinct regional identity.
