      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: More floral and transparent in fruit than the producer's more robust, earthier Kammerberg, the Sankt Paul offers bristling raspberry and red-plum flavors accented by hints of leather and forest floor. Sourced from a limestone outcrop on the Alsatian border, it's a fresh, invigorating red that drinks well now but should continue to improve through 2035.
      • James Suckling: Bright violets and black raspberry essence come to the fore. The medium-bodied palate is vertical and edgy with racy acidity, yet plenty of supple, overt dark fruit. Steely tannins round off a robust wine.

      Producer Information

Weingut Friedrich Becker is a German wine producer based in Pfalz region of western Germany, close to the border with France. Indeed, Becker has vineyards planted on both German and French soil, and cultivates a range of varieties that are common to the area, including Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Riesling. The Becker family has been farming in Pfalz for several generations, although vinegrowing was secondary to livestock rearing and fruit growing. In the mid-20th Century, the family shifted their attention to viticulture, capitalizing on the prime grape-growing conditions at the edge of the Palatinate forest. The estate released its first commercially made wines in 1973, in bottles bearing the estate's now trademark fox logo. The soils in around the estate's Schweigen vineyards are composed of deep layers of shell limestone. This, in combination with the region's mild climate, provide the ideal growing conditions for Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Riesling and Chardonnay grapes. These varieties occupy around 80 percent of the estate's vineyards, with the remainder planted to Silvaner, Muscat, Gewürztraminer, Müller-Thurgau, Portugieser, Pinot Meunier and Cabernet Sauvignon. Weingut Friedrich Becker is a member of the VDP (The Association of German Quality and Prädikat Wine Estates) and produces three Grosses Gewächs-classified wines: two Pinot Noir wines from the Alsace vineyards of Kammerberg and Sankt Paul, as well as a grand cru Riesling wine from the Sonnenberg vineyard in Pfalz. In addition to its range of still red and white wines, Weingut Friedrich Becker makes a selection of methode traditionnelle sparkling wines made from Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir, Auxerrois and Chardonnay.
