2017 | Zuccardi | Aluvional Los Chacayes

Los Chacayes is a zone in the Uco Valley with soils that are rich in stones, although it also has the limestone deposits that are typical of high-altitude vineyards at the foot of the Andes in Mendoza. Here, malbec often has a hard, tense style. In a warm year you taste that tension, but in this case, it’s accompanied by voluptuous ripe black fruit that makes it much friendlier. This is another Zuccardi malbec destined for the cellar.

• Wine Advocate: The Aluvional range is the "paraje," or lieu-dit, range, and the 2017 Aluvional Los Chacayes comes from the alluvial cone in the south of the appellation, where there is a little more soil, while in the north there are more stones, as you can see in The Vines of Mendoza. These soils provide for more balanced wines, while the wines from the north can be riper. This is 14.3% alcohol but still feels austere, and there's no room for sweetness. There are flowers and aromatic herbs and subtle freshness; there is texture but no concentration; and it's medium-bodied with finesse and fruit-forward tannins. It fermented in concrete with indigenous yeasts and matured in 500-liter oak barrels and concrete.

Familia Zuccardi is a family-run winery based out of the Bodega Santa Julia in the Mendoza region of Argentina. The company boasts numerous brands, each with a wide range of wines, covering classic Argentinian varieties (the wines are often varietally labeled) as well as numerous styles including sweet and sparkling wines. Zuccardi produced the country's first premium Tempranillo and also runs olive oil brand Zuelo.Founder Alberto Zuccardi moved to Mendoza in the 1940s from Tucumán, over 900km (560 miles) north, where his grandparents had settled after emigrating from Avelino, Italy.Due to the scarcity of water in the Mendoza region, Alberto experimented with a new irrigation system and, wanting to prove its worth to his neighbors, he planted a vineyard in Maipu. The experiment led to Zuccardi becoming one of the most prominent and prosperous wineries in Argentina.
