      Reviews:

      • Wine Enthusiast: This ripe blend of 50% Sémillon with Sauvignons Blanc and Gris is ripe and full in the mouth. Touches of herbaceousness are mitigated by the tropical fruits and perfumes from the Sauvignon Gris. Drink the wine now.
      • Andreas Larsson: Bright light golden colour with a green hue. Aromatic nose displaying ripe yellow fruit, fresh pineapple, fine oak, cut grass, beeswax and some floral notes. The palate has a nice density and extract, fine oak integration, ripe and warm but balanced by a fine freshness. Layered and long finish.

      Producer Information

Château de Chantegrive is a large wine estate in the Graves region southeast of Bordeaux city, on the left bank of the Garonne river. The domaine lies around 30km (20 miles) southeast of Bordeaux city center, in the commune of Podensac, just north of the Sauternes region. It produces a range of red and white Bordeaux wines alongside the flagship red and white Château de Chantegrive grand vins. The family-owned estate was established in 1966 by husband-and-wife couple Henri and Françoise Lévêque and, at 96 hectares (237 acres) is one of the largest estates in the appellation. The vineyards are broken up into 160 plots composed of classic gravelly, sandy soils mixed with silt on top of clay and limestone. Two thirds of the vineyard are planted to red grape varieties and broadly split evenly between Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. There are also small plantings of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The remaining third is a 50/50 split of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. A small area is also given over to Sauvignon Gris, which is mainly found in the Cuvée Caroline label, albeit providing only around five percent of the final blend. The vines have an average age of around 40 years old. Château de Chantegrive produces a range of wines – two red Bordeaux wines, both composed of broadly equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon; two Bordeaux Blanc wines, each a roughly equal blend of Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc; and a rosé produced from Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The estate's top red, Cuvée Henri Lévêque, is aged in new French oak barrels for 15 months and bottled unfiltered. The top white, Cuvée Caroline, is barrel fermented in 50 percent new French oak and barrel matured nine months before bottling. Château de Chantegrive also produces a sweet white wine made entirely from Sémillon and labeled under the Cérons appellation. The estate also produces the so-called "bird" series, known as Les Oiseaux de Chantegrive. These are destined for early release and drinking and cover a red blend (L'origine), a barrel-fermented and aged Bordeaux white (Le Panache), and a stainless steel-fermented and aged white (La Pureté). Total production averages some 40,000 cases annually.
