The Taylor winery was founded in 1880 as a juice company with a 7-acre vineyard overlooking Keuka Lake. Two years later it began making wine, and was firmly established by the time of Prohibition. The business went public in 1962, and grew quickly. In 1970 Walter S. Taylor, the grandson of the founder, left to found Bully Hill Vineyards, having become disenchanted with the business direction. By 1977 it was owned by Cocoa-Cola, who experienced a drop in sales as the local hybrid-grape reds became unpopular in the face of a surge in popularity of Chardonnay. Volumes requested from and prices paid to contract growers plummeted.
