Producer Information
Château Laffitte Carcasset is a wine estate based in the commune of Saint-Estèphe, at the northern limit of the Haut-Médoc wine region, some 55km (34 miles) north of Bordeaux city center. Three wines are produced at the winery: the grand vin, Château Laffitte Carcasset; Le Reflet de Laffitte Carcasset – the second wine; and Le Corsair de Laffitte Carcasset. Unusually (for the region as a whole), a white wine based on Chardonnay is slated for production. The estate boasts 35 hectares (86 acres) of vineyard with 60 percent planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and 30 percent Merlot. The remainder is divided between Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay. These proportions are roughly reflected in the final blend of the grand vin. Merlot tends to predominaate in the second wine and Le Corsair de Laffitte Carcasset (both were made with 60 percent Merlot and 40 Cabernet Sauvignon in 2020). The estate itself dates back to 1759 and was established in an area known as Le Carcasset in central Saint-Estèphe. It was bought by the Jean Laffitte – a Bordeaux solicitor and royal prosecutor– in 1781 and took the name Laffitte. Despite numerous changes of ownership over the next two centurues, the name Laffitte was retained and wines were labeled as Château Laffitte-Saint-Estèphe. Current owner, businessman Pierre Rousseau – whose father was a pioneer in folding caravans and established the Rapido caravan company (now the Rapido group, encompassing a range of caravans and mobile home brands) – acquired the property in 2016. Wines are made with input from Pomerol-based Hubert de Boüard Consulting.
