        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: The 2019 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is the debut release of this new cuvĂ©e from Domaine de la RomanĂ©e-Conti, produced from almost three hectares of vineyards, in the communes of Aloxe-Corton and Pernand-Vergelesses, that have been leased from Bonneau du Martray since November 2018. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of citrus zest, pear and preserved peaches mingled with wheat toast, sesame oil, vanilla pod, beeswax and smoke, it's full-bodied, rich and textural, with a ripe, enveloping core of fruit that's framed by lively acids and chalky structuring extract. Concluding with a long, saline finish, it reflects the domaine's vision for Chardonnay—picked at full maturity, in a powerful, gastronomic style—while remaining more tightly coiled and mineral in style than its Montrachet stablemate. This was a particularly memorable tasting at the Domaine de la RomanĂ©e-Conti. Revisiting the bottled 2019s was thrilling, as these are some of the most sensual, dramatic young wines I've ever tasted at this address; and the young 2020s, tasted from barrel (with the exception of several cuvĂ©es that had been recently racked), show immense potential too.
        • Burghound: There is enough wood to point out surrounding the mildly exotic and phenolic aromas of dried white and yellow orchard fruit that possess intricate nuances of spice, Asian-style tea, fennel, floral wisps and wet stone. I very much like the highly seductive texture of the caressing and beautifully concentrated mineral-driven big-bodied flavors that display stunningly good length on the very dry and impeccably well-balanced finale. This gorgeous CC should age gracefully for the next 12 to 15 years and drink well for twice that long. A great first effort!

        Producer Information

Domaine de la RomanĂ©e-Conti, or DRC as it is commonly known, is easily Burgundy's best-known and most collectible wine producer. Based in the Burgundy village of Vosne-RomanĂ©e, the domaine sells wines from eight different grand cru vineyards that span the length of the CĂŽte d'Or. The most famous comes from the eponymous RomanĂ©e-Conti vineyard, and on average is the most expensive wine in the world. The domaine predominately produces Pinot Noir-based wines from 28 hectares (69 acres) of grand cru vineyard. Alongside RomanĂ©e-Conti are La TĂąche, RomanĂ©e-Saint-Vivant and Richebourg in Vosne-RomanĂ©e; plus Échezeaux and Grands Échezeaux bottlings. Fruit from Corton-Bressandes, Corton Clos du Roi and Corton Renardes is combined in a single Corton Grand Cru red. There are three white (Chardonnay) wines made. Only one of these, the Montrachet is made widely avilable. A BĂątard-Montrachet and a Bourgogne Hautes CĂŽtes de Nuits are not publically distributed. Of course, La RomanĂ©e-Conti is the domaine's most famous asset, and the amount of wine made from less than 2ha (5 acres) of land amounts to just 6000 bottles a year. The vineyard has a long history, dating back to the Abbey of Saint-Vivant in the 13th Century. It took on the RomanĂ©e name in 1631, and the Conti in 1760. In 1869, it was obtained by Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet, who left it to his great grandchildren upon his death. It was then that the SociĂ©tĂ©-Civile du Domaine de la RomanĂ©e-Conti was established to avoid Napoleonic inheritance laws. Today, DRC is owned in part by the de Villaine family and in part by the Leroy family. Aubert de Villaine is the figurehead of the company now – although it was famously run by Lalou Bize-Leroy for a time, until a dispute saw her ousted from control. DRC's eight grand cru wines are a familiar label on the world auction scene, and are notable for the high prices they regularly fetch, particularly the RomanĂ©e-Conti. Unfortunately, this comes with its own challenges – it is also one of the world's most frequently counterfeited wines.
