It is one of the country's leading producers of Chenin Blanc, although the company makes a wide array of red and white wines from other top South African varieties like Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon. Ken Forrester's wines are considered by many to be of very good value. The property was originally known as Zandberg, and the first vineyards were planted there in 1694 by Frederick Boot, a man infamous for fathering eight children out of wedlock and being banished to Mauritius as a consequence. In 1833, the property fell into the hands of the Scholtz family, who renamed the property Scholtzenhof. The Scholtz family farmed the property for well over a century, before falling on hard times during apartheid. The Forrester family purchased the property in 1993, and restored the home and replanted the vines, releasing their first vintage in 1994. The estate lies on the lower slopes of the Helderberg mountain. Here, the warm sunshine is tempered by the maritime influence from the Atlantic promoting a long growing season. Several varieties are grown on the property including Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Shiraz.
