      Detailed Description

Crushed raspberry puree, black cherry and cranberry flavors have a terrific presence, with fresh and juicy details, including dragon-well tea, white pepper and forest floor, plus notes of clove and spice that linger on the finish.

      Producer Information

Urlar is a winery in the Gladstone subregion of the Wairarapa, on the North Island of New Zealand. It has been certified as organic with Biogro since 2010, and employs biodynamic principals. The core range includes varietal wines from Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Riesling. Under the Select Parcels banner there is a further Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. The Mediator Pinot Noir is a barrel selection. There are 31 hectares of vines in a single vineyard. Rotating inter row crops are used for soil health and biodiversity and to encourage natural predators for pests such as the Tasmanica Wasp, which preys on the Leaf Roll Caterpillar. The estate has been landscaped to encourage native bird life. Over 1,500 native trees have been planted. The winery is built from lightweight steel panels which minimize energy costs for keeping barrels cool in summer. The refridgeration system recycles heat and also provides tank heating. Water can be brought to boiling point for barrel cleaning via solar panels. Urlar is the Gaelic name for The Earth. Since 2019 the company has been owned by Yoichiro Nishi, eighth-generation owner of Nishi Sake Brewing Co.
