    Country/Region: Italy, Primitivo di Manduria

      Detailed Description

Burly red alert! If you like 'em burly, you're in the right place. This comes from Puglia, right in the south of Italy where it gets hot. The grape here is Primitivo aka Zinfandel, which thrives in the baking heat producing big wines with surprising elegance. In a word: magnifico!

      Producer Information

Magnifco’s Primitivo takes its name from the vineyards from which its grapes are grown – vineyards found in the Puglian region of Manduria, at the mid-point of Italy’s fiery heel. ‘Rosso Fuoco’ signifies ‘red fire’, and reflects the hot, south-facing and sun-drenched growing conditions of Southern Italy’s Puglia, where Primitivo grapes are grown on bush vines, creating shade for the fruit as a means of maintaining some acidity and varietal clarity in the face of the region’s glaring heat. Magnifico captures the essence of this climate – a climate that’s nurtured Primitivo vines for centuries, producing grapes that provide magnificent depth, contributing to fuller-bodied wines with roots in the oldest of wine traditions. It’s believed Primitivo found its way to Puglia with the first settlers of the Italian peninsula, having originated in ancient Greece. Utilising techniques that seek to celebrate this Puglian speciality, the Magnifico winery produces accessible wines that place tradition, modernity – and drinkability – at their core. Innovative winemaking techniques ensure their wines are consistent, reliable and clean – but always engaging and best drunk young. A carefully controlled fermentation, which uses a submerged cap system, extracts delicate tannins and varietal characteristics – plum, earth and spice – while a minimum aging of 24 months in large Slavonian and American oak barrels ensures the Magnifico Primitivo di Manduria provides silky tannins, seductive dark fruit flavours and avoids any overwhelm from oak. Consistently good value, consistently satisfying.
