      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: From the core parcels in the cru, the 2022 Morstein Westhofen Riesling GG is pure, intense and chalky on the elegant, dense and spicy, darker-toned nose that is still a bit untamed but deep and exciting, even with woodruff aromas! Enormously mineral and tannic on the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich and enormously complex, masculine and monolithic Riesling that needs a lot of time in the cellar to develop and refine. A highly promising Riesling! 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2023.
      • Vinous: The 2022 Riesling Westhofener Morstein Grosses Gewächs opens with reduction, but vivid, pure and lifted lemon shines through. The following sniffs reveal lemon balm and dried crushed herbs suggesting coolness, serenity and more yeasty depth. The palate has a certain stoniness, an austerity, suggesting wet, chalky deep earth rather than deeper fruit. Graceful phenolics build the frame and coat the mouth. This only ever seems to point deeper into stone. Fine-boned yet powerful, the 2022 is a sleeper. This is endurance and solidity, unmoved by fruit. Austere but grand.

      Producer Information

Weingut Wittmann is a well-regarded wine estate based in the wine-growing village of Westhofen in the Rheinhessen region of Germany. It is primarily dedicated to the production of top-quality Riesling wines sourced from the four Grosses Gewächs-classified sites in Westhofen – Aulerde, Kirchspiel, Morstein and Brunnenhauschen. The Wittmann family has a long history of winemaking in the area, dating back to 1663. The four top Westhofen vineyards offer varied terroir, producing different styles of Riesling. The Aulerde vineyard is protected by the eastern and southeastern slopes of the neighbouring Kirchspiel site and is therefore the warmest of the estate's vineyards. The Brunnenhäuschen site's elevated position means that the grapes grown here ripen slowly, and are harvested later than the other sites. Weingut Wittmann cultivates half a hectare (1.2 acres) of Riesling in the old Abtserde parcel in Brunnenhäuschen. All estate vineyards were converted to organic viticulture in 1990 and began implementing biodynamics from 2004. The Morstein site was first documented in 1282 and is planted to four hectares (10 acres) of Riesling in the parcel's best southeast-facing slopes. Wittmann's grapes are harvested by hand and processed in modern presses that replicate the action of traditional basket presses. After pressing, the musts are left to ferment spontaneously in oak casks in the presence of natural yeasts. In addition to the estate's Grosses Gewächs-classified Riesling wines, Weingut Wittmann also produces a range of dry and Auslese Rieslings, as well as a selection of Scheurebe, Silvaner, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines.
