Detailed Description

Mezcal de Leyendas Maguey Tobala Oaxaca is crafted by producer Aaron Robles who learned the trade from his father in law. Upon returning to Mexico, he took up making the mezcal that the region is famous for. The tobala agaves are grown sustainably and distilled on a mountainside, the distillery only reachable via a 3-hour horse ride from the nearest village. The piñas are roasted in lava-rock covered stone pits and ferment for 5 days in oak vats. Then they are double-distilled in a copper-pot still.

Distillery Information

Mezcal de Leyendas is focused on bringing several different variations of artisanal mezcal to the global market. Instead of focusing on one particular type, their aim is to find unconventional spirits that use unusual types of agave that aren't typically used in mezcal production. These are sourced from diverse regions, highlighting the local terroir as well as showcasing the skills of local Maestros Mezcaleros. Each region ? be it Durango, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Puebla, or San Luis Potosi ? features one master producer of mezcal. But they do far more than just that. In 2005 they opened the first Mexico City establishment that only sells artisanal mezcal, in 2007 they opened Hecho En Dumbo, a New York City restaurant that offers modern takes on Mexican classics. They organize festivals and work to modernize the industry, educate, and take part in projects that deal with sustainability and fair trade ? both crucial aspects of securing a bright future for the famous Mexican spirits.
