Detailed Description

This is a 12 year old single malt produced at the Mortlach distillery in Speyside, unveiled in 2018 as part of a trio (including a 16 Year Old and a 20 Year Old). This particular expression features the subtitle The Wee Witchie, which comes from the name of the tiny still that distils a portion of the whisky. It's drawn from bourbon and sherry casks, and packs a hearty punch of meaty Mortlach-y malt at its core, supported by dried fruit and toffee notes.

Nose: Nutty fruit cake with juicy sultanas, candied ginger and bittersweet marmalade. Fruity dark chocolate sits underneath, along with baked apples topped with a generous grating of nutmeg. Gravelly touches develop, with walnuts and hazelnuts, and a touch of nut-shell woodiness. The nuts become nut brittle and candied peanuts, and more fruit appears: tropical trail mix and dried apple rings.

Palate: Rich toffee and brown sugar. Soft sultanas and spiced sponge cake follow. Spice rolls in – cinnamon and clove – with raisin-topped baked apples dusted with caster sugar. Poached pear notes develop, drizzled with caramel sauce and served with a side of apple jelly.

Finish: Well balanced, combining darker sherry notes with fresher orchard-fruit flavours, all while emphasising the distillery’s weighty character.

Mortlach distillery is a distiller of Scotch whisky in Dufftown, Moray, Scotland. Founded in 1823, the distillery is currently owned by Diageo. The whisky is a key component in several Johnnie Walker bottlings., while Diageo also markets four Mortlach single malts. The still pictured above is Dufftown distillery.
