Detailed Description

A 1990 vintage single malt from the Tomatin distillery, released as part of its Cù Bòcan series - named for a ghostly hound in the highlands. These releases are smoky expressions, making a change from Tomatin's usual unpeated whiskies. However, the distillery has only been doing short bursts of peated whisky distilling since 2005 - how have they got subtly smoky whisky distilled back in 1990?! Well, this expression is drawn from casks that previously held heavily peated Islay whisky, imparting wafts of smoke to the spirit. Fascinating stuff for sure. 1,400 bottles were produced.

Tomatin Cu Bocan 1990 Vintage Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky | 700ML Tasting Notes

Nose: Heather-y earthiness balanced by tropical fruit juice and freshly cut oak. Soft waves of toasty smoke develop after a minute in the glass.

Palate: Peat is much more forthcoming on the palate, with hints of burnt ends and BBQ pineapple. Still subtly floral.

Finish: Salted butter of rye toast, peaches in syrup.

Distillery Information

Tomatin distillery is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery in the village of Tomatin. Its whisky is classified as being from the Highland region, as it is 25 minutes south of Inverness. Although it is thought that whisky has been distilled on the site since the 16th century, when cattle drivers would buy from a local still, the distillery was not established until 1897, under the name of Tomatin Spey Distillery Co Ltd. The company went bankrupt in 1906, and reopened under new ownership in 1909. After the liquidation of its owners in 1986, it was taken over by Japanese conglomerate Takara Shuzo and was renamed Tomatin Distillery Co Ltd.
