Detailed Description

Wathen's Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is made from a mash of corn, rye, and malted barley. After the grains have been harvested, they are milled and mashed before being fermented with an eight-generation old yeast strain (the unique strain of Medley Family yeast has been inherited by each generation of Medley's since the 19th century, and remains a closely-guarded family secret). Following fermentation, the wash is distilled through a copper-pot still before being aged in new, charred American oak casks under the Kentucky sun. This barrel proof Wathen’s expression is a limited release, with only 25 barrels being produced. Each expression varies in proofs ranging from 109.6 to 118.6.

Wathen's | Barrel Proof | Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Tasting Notes

Nose: Aromas of caramel and vanilla with underlying savory notes.

Palate: Balanced with nutty flavors, fruit, spices and woody notes.

Finish: Warming finish that has touches of creamy vanilla, and is rounded and smooth.

Distillery Information

The Wathen-Medley family has been distilling premium bourbon for 8 generations, beginning more than 100 years before prohibition. When the 21st amendment was ratified in the winter of 1933, Thomas Aquinas Medley began distilling and releasing unaged spirits to get started, much like the whiskey producers of today. Thomas Aquinas Medley first produced bourbon and sold it as a 30 day old spirit. This was a far cry from his aged bourbons of pre-prohibition, but people were ecstatic! Next came a 60 day bourbon. And so it went until sufficient reserves had been built and a sufficiently aged bourbon could be offered.
