1978 | Cossart Gordon | Bual (Half Bottle)

Produced from grapes grown in the area of Calheta, the warmest and sunniest area on the volcanic island of Madeira, producing wines that are highly appreciated for their balance of acidity and sweetness. Hand-harvested in 1978, foot-trodden in traditional wooden lagares and then aged for over 40 years in the “Canteiro” system (old oak casks supported on long wooden beams) in the warehouses of Madeira Wine Company, Funchal and then later in Caniçal. Clear bright mahogany colour with a golden-green hue. Very characteristic exuberant bouquet, with notes of spice, tobacco, and cedar. Powerful and medium sweet on the palate, with a very fresh, intense, long finish with hints of vanilla.

Cossart, Gordon & Co. was established by Francis Newton, a young Scot, in 1745 and is the oldest company in the Madeira wine trade. By 1850, the firm was said to be shipping "half the growth of the island" leading to the company acquiring an unequaled reputation as suppliers of fine Madeiras.
