The 2001 vintage is pure and intense, brimming with citrus fruit, white flowers, honey, buttered toast, mineral notes and just a hint of toffee. Lovely to be enjoyed now.

Exceptionally powerful and very masculine, this is an opulent, take-no-prisoners style of wine that manages to remain exceptionally well focused and precise and delivers the weight and power with grace and the beautifully balanced finish lasts for minutes.

Domaine d'Auvenay is a small Burgundian wine estate based in Saint-Romain. It is the third entity of the Leroy empire, named after Lalou Bize-Leroy and previously been run by her husband Marcel Bize until his death in 2004. Estate-grown village, Premier Cru and Grand Cru wines made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are produced under the d'Auvenay label. There are only 4 hectares (10 acres) of vines, compared with the 22ha (54 acres) at Domaine Leroy, but these holdings include plots in the Mazis-Chambertin, Bonnes-Mares and Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru vineyards, as well as in a small handful of premier cru vineyards including Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières and Meursault les Gouttes d'Or.
